If you read ten articles about this topic in one sitting, you come away with the same mental model: there is an ATS, it has AI features inside it, you turn them on, hiring gets faster. Resume summariser. Auto-matching. Interview note autofill. Maybe a chat box on top of the candidate record.

That model made sense when AI meant one large language model call per resume. It stopped making sense the day agent architectures arrived.   • Open a match score on a real candidate. Ask to see the claims, the weights, the resume spans. If it opens as a single number, it is not AI in the 2026 sense.
  • Ask where the approval queue lives. Get a concrete answer: a web view, a Gmail thread, an MCP notification. Nowhere is the wrong answer.
  • Ask whether the product exposes a non-UI surface. MCP server, API, or a structured agent endpoint. If the only way to drive the product is through the vendor’s web app, you are renting their UI team.
  • Ask for the published price for a 10-recruiter team, on the spot. If the answer requires a pricing team, treat the demo as a cost and the price as a range.
  • Ask whether the AI trains on your candidate data. Get the answer in writing in the DPA.
  • Ask whether AI can be turned off per jurisdiction, per role, per stage. If the only switch is global, your Colorado and NY reqs will not behave the way compliance requires.
  • Ask for the migration path off Greenhouse, Lever, or Workday Recruiting, priced and timelined. A renewal conversation is more honest than a new-customer pitch.

What actually makes an applicant tracking system AI, not just AI-branded?

Three concrete tests. One: can you open a match score and see the specific claims, weights, and resume evidence spans that produced it, and override any of them? Two: does every candidate-facing action (an outreach email, a reschedule, a stage change) pass through a human approval queue before it leaves the product? Three: can you drive the product from outside its own UI, for example by asking a question inside ChatGPT or Claude and having the ATS answer from your real pipeline? If the answer to any of those is no, the product is AI-branded, not AI-native.

Does Chosen really work from inside ChatGPT and Claude?

How is this different from Greenhouse with Real Talent AI or Ashby with AI Recruiter?

Real Talent AI and Ashby AI Recruiter are features added to an existing ATS. They live inside the ATS UI and assume you will open that UI to use them. Chosen treats the agents as the primary product and the ATS record UI as one interface among several. The result is the same class of AI (resume screening, scheduling automation, analytics), arranged differently: an MCP-addressable agent graph that can be driven from ChatGPT, Claude, Gmail, or Slack, with the approval queue as the common approval surface. You can point a ChatGPT project at your pipeline. You cannot point ChatGPT at Greenhouse.

What if I do not want my recruiters driving the ATS from ChatGPT?

The web queue is always available and is the primary surface for most teams. The MCP server is additive, not a replacement. It matters most for two cases: a VP of Talent doing board prep inside Claude, and a hiring manager who lives in Slack and wants to ask about a pipeline without logging into a separate ATS. If neither pattern applies, you can ignore MCP entirely. Every feature still ships on every plan.

How does the agent architecture satisfy NYC Local Law 144 and the 2026 compliance wave?

Match Rating is the audit layer. Every score is a list of 5 to 15 testable claims with a visible weight, classified must-have / nice-to-have / red flag, each linked to a specific span in the resume. Every override is logged. That claim log is the review flow NYC DCWP Local Law 144, Illinois HB 3773, Colorado CAIA, and the EU AI Act high-risk hiring obligations were written for. A black-box similarity score cannot satisfy a why-this-score notice requirement. A list of checked claims with evidence can.

What happens to recruiter workflow on day one of migration?
